When power goes out, we are working hard to restore it. We hate it when the power goes out just as much as you do. When there is an outage, we work hard to resume service as quickly and safely as possible. Many times, the reasons for outages are beyond our control. Secure Essential Supplies
Keep a 3- to 5-day supply of drinking water (1 gallon per person per day) and nonperishable foods, along with a manual can opener and necessary items for pets.
Maintain Communication Tools
Ensure you have a battery-powered radio, an alarm clock, and at least 1 phone that works without power. Plan a communication strategy with family members, keep emergency contacts handy, and store extra batteries to stay connected during the outage.
Prepare for Safety and Comfort
Stock essential medications, first-aid kits, hygiene supplies, flashlights, extra batteries, and cold-weather gear, and use battery-operated lighting instead of candles to prevent fire hazards.
Generator Safety
During a power outage or when using a generator as a power source, it is crucial to follow safety guidelines, including:
Switch the main breaker or fuse on the service panel to the “off” position before starting a gasoline- or diesel-powered portable generator.
Prevent backfeed electrical energy from inadvertently energizing power lines, which could endanger utility workers, repair crews, or neighbors.
Protect the generator and your home’s electrical system from damage when utility power is restored.
